What to do with that side yard?

Before you give up on that small tract of terra firma that seems to have no purpose, give these ideas a thought.

1. Hardscape the area, making a concrete path to traverse to the back yard.

2. Installing a River Rock pathway is an excellent solution. All the grass is removed, leaving you less to mow or maintain, but more impact.

3. Planter boxes will help liven up the area and will require less maintenance if native, drought tolerant plants are planted.

4. Storage opportunities are always an option.

5. Plant a Garden. Even a Container Garden can work out well if drainage is an issue in this area.

6. Install a Sculpture or Water Feature and this area becomes a special place in its own right.

Whatever you visualize, let Russell Landscape Designs make it a reality for you!

While the heat seems to be here to stay and hardly bearable, I just had to search “How many days until Fall?”. 48 days was the answer. Photos of golden twilight sunsets and colorful falling leaves appeared, as well as people enjoying their backyard in light jackets. “Ahhh!”, I thought to myself, closing my eyes. I could feel the wind with a slight coolness, even if just from past memories. I was quite surprised at how close that actually is from now! The time is NOW to plan for your backyard Fall activities, like grilling while enjoying football or the new season of your favorite show, marshmallows on the firepit, a light blanket on the seating wall, or an extended dip in the spa. These are all visions that we can make YOUR reality. (We love it when we can make your life more enjoyable!)

All Industries have their “go to” place to read and learn about innovation of the trade or confirmation that what has been working is still the best for our Clients and business. For instance, did you know that the Construction vehicle and equipment giant, Caterpillar will be offering a phone in July? Its uses are, of course, geared toward the Contractor. Continental Tire announced that it has produced and tested the world’s first tires made from dandelion-derived rubber. These will be the first tires where the tread is made completely from dandelion natural rubber as a polymer. And we thought it was just another weed! Then, there is one of my favorite articles confirming once again that being around trees can reduce one’s stress levels and blood pressure. The University of Illinois decided to follow up on this belief with additional research. The initial results showed positive association between the amount of trees and recovery from stress.“These finding suggest that viewing a tree canopy in communities can aid stress recovery and that every tree matters,” Dr. Bin Jiang reported in the study’s abstract. Regardless of age, gender, and initial stress levels, the greater the exposure to trees, the less stress the subject felt. Clear evidence that we need to get outside and enjoy nature’s natural stress busters. Meet you on the patio!

Today, we require more from our yards than ever before. We recognize that our landscapes and hardscapes are to function in more ways than one. We want more native plants to cut down on maintenance, more surface area to cook and entertain, more curb appeal and increased property value. We also want our landscapes to handle the climate changes, clean our air and offer beauty to our everyday lives. While your looking around your yard today, think of a change that will give you more. Could it be an expanded Outdoor Living Area or Patio? A Pergola or Patio Cover for shade to enjoy the summer months? More lighting to extend your enjoyment time outdoors? An Outdoor Kitchen for more food and fun?

Whatever you need more of, Russell Landscape Designs can make it a reality for you.

This is more of a sharing of pictures than a blog entry. I spotted these flowers on a trip to the local plant nursery and couldn't believe how beautiful they were! Make certain to get some beauty into your yard as soon as possible. You'll be glad you did!
